2009 Biathlon Worlds – France Wins Mixed Relay

February 19, 2009 (Pyeong Chang, Korea) – On Thursday in the mixed relay event at the 2009 Biathlon World Championships France pulled off an upset win over powerhouses Germany, Norway and Russia. Despite having top star, Ole Einar Bjoerndalen, on the anchor leg the Norwegian team finished 4th off 41 seconds from a podium position. France won with a time of 1:10:30.0, benefiting from poor shooting by Germany, Norway and Russia. Sweden took second place just 6.2 seconds from the lead and only 2.8 seconds ahead of Germany in third. France only missed 6 shots, Sweden 3, Germany 11, Norway 11, and Russia missed 11 to settle for 5th.

The Canadian team made up of Zina Kocher, Megan Imrie, Jean Philippe Leguellec, and Robin Clegg placed 16th out of the 20 teams that started finishing 5:23.5 back from Norway with 13 missed shots. The USA rested both Tim Burke and Lowell Bailey, Haley Johnson and the Barnes sisters. They started Carolyn Bramante Treacy, Laura Spector, Jeremy Teela, and Russell Currie who finished 7:29.8 back from the lead with 12 misses.
