FIS XC Lahti Women’s 4x5km Relay – Norway Nips Germany

Finns Empty Handed

by Dorcas Wonsavage

March 07, 2010   (Lahti, FIN) – Sunday’s FIS XC Women’s 4x5km relay played out under perfect conditions. Norway’s expected win was almost a given and the only real question was by how much. Competitors stayed close through the first three legs, and in the fourth leg a group of five broke away – Bjoergen (NOR), Skofterud(NOR2), Korosteleva (RUS), Follis (ITA) and Sachenbacher (GER).

Skofterud led the group until Bjoergen attacked on the last climb but only Follis and Sachenbacher were able to stay with her. Coming into the stadium Follis made an error giving Germany a chance and the final result was Norway first, Germany second, and Italy third.

Despite fielding four teams, the host country Finland failed to place anyone near the front. Neither the USA or Canada fielded a team.

Full results here.

Results (brief)
1.    Norway I (Kristoffersen, Johaug, Steira, Bjoergen) 52:48.9
2.    Germany (Fessel, Zeller, Goessner, Sachenbacher-Stehle) +0.7
3.    Italy (Longa, Confortola-Wyatt, Valbusa, Follis) +1.0
