Junior/U23 Worlds Recap and Second Leg of Euro Adventure

February 4, 2010 (Hinterzarten, Germany) – The US Junior and U23 Teams raced fantastic at the 2010 Junior/U23 World Championships in Hinterzarten, Germany over the past week. The US team had almost everyone skiing in the top 30 every day, with a few racing in the top 20. Ida Sargent placed 4th in the skate, and Simi Hamilton won the skate sprint qualifications.

There were a few clear days at the venue early the first week but when the races started the fog rolled in. There was no visibility first two days of racing because of the thick fog, and then there was a blizzard during the last four days of racing. We had quite the adventure each day trying to make it up the long, winding road to the venue. The only way to get all of the racers to their starts in time was for the vans to back up the entire load with all nine passengers squished in. But no one missed his or her start!

Unfortunately I was not racing at my best. I was whomped in the skate race and then again in the 5km classic. I was feeling really good all week, but my shins and calves were not cooperating. I debated going home after JWCs and getting surgery again since I think other compartments need surgery, but I’ve decided to stay in Europe with the Methow Olympic Development Team for the month.

I need the mental lift, even if I can’t race in many, or any, of the OPA Cup races that we are traveling to. We’re somewhere in Switzerland now, in a tiny town of 23 residents, with no Internet, surrounded by the most amazing mountains. There are 20km of beautiful ski trails that wind through the valley. On Thursday we head to Compra, SUI for the first weekend of racing!

When I get Internet access again I’ll send more news. Take care for now and ski fast!
