Alberta Cup Mt. Sharkfest 6.5/10km Freestyle Mass Start – Killick and Hewitt Win Grueling Finale

by Dorcas Wonsavage

March 28, 2010 (Kananaskis Park, AB) – The Alberta Cup’s Mt. Sharkfest is an end of season must-attend for the points, the bragging rights, and the unique race site. Situated in the middle of Kananaskis Provincial Park, you need to pay attention to the weather, the road conditions, and even have a good vehicle just to get there.

Once there, the remote site means no indoor facilities and no electrical power. The course, set at 1,800meters, is described on SkiFaster.net “…crazy technical down hills and deceiving hard climbs to burn the legs, and were the cause of more than one spectacular crash. Sharkfest is a notorious points race, being the last chance on the Canadian circuit to grab some CPL points.”.

The 2010 Mt. Sharkfest National champion is Graeme Killick. He dominated the men’s 10km Freestyle Mass Start event with a 1-minute margin to win over his Banff teammate Haakon Lenes. The women’s 6.5km race came down to an exciting sprint finish with Sara Hewitt of AWCA and Sarah Daitch of Fort Smith. In the end Hewitt grabbed the gold just five seconds ahead of Daitch.
The action winds up on Sunday with the 2-person sprint relay.
