APU Completes 4th and Final Summer Glacier Camp

release by APU Nordic Ski Center
August 14, 2008 (Anchorage, AK) – The Alaska Pacific University Nordic Ski Centre (APUNSC), recently completed it’s fourth glacier camp of the season. This time 15 athletes and three coaches from the programs Elite, University, and Junior teams made the trip up for the final time to the Lowell Thomas Training Centre. The “summer that almost wasn’t” continued to produce below average temperatures and left the glacier surface with June-like snow conditions. On the final evening Eagle glacier was blanketed in 12 inches of new (wet) snow. Thankfully it was a skate workout that morning!

The invariable weather this summer gave the APU team an excellent opportunity to train in many different snow conditions. Over the course of the four camps the athletes logged 22 days of on-snow skiing. The team will now regroup next week to begin the next phase of their off-season training, after enjoying a much needed week of recovery.

The Lowell Thomas glacier facility is located at approximately 5,800 ft on the edge of a snow bowl known as Eagle glacier. It is located just outside of Girdwood, Alaska a 45-minute drive south of Anchorage.
