APU Completes On-Snow Camp Number Three

release by APU Nordic Ski Center
July 22, 2008 (Anchorage, AK) – Three camps down and one more to go, as the Alaska Pacific University’s Ski team completed it’s longest on-snow camp of the summer. At seven days in total – which added up to 12 on-snow training sessions – it was also the largest camp so far. Joining the Elite team up at the Lowell Thomas Training Center was the programs College team as well as two athletes from the Junior division.

In total 20 athletes and three coaches spent seven days on Eagle Glacier just 45 minutes south of Anchorage. As with the previous camp the crew had to ascend the approximate 5,000 ft climb to the glacier under their-own power – heavy cloud coverage made flying in by helicopter impossible.

Every weather condition that could be expected was experienced at some point during the week. There were moments of blue sky, heavy cloud, rain, high winds and on the morning of July 18th the team woke up to 4 inches of fresh wet snow. As difficult as it was to get out the door some days, head coach Erik Flora summed the experience up best when he said, “these are the days when champions are made.”
