November 08, 2010 – Athletes who have authorization from FIS to use asthma medications in order to compete are not doping, states an article in langd.se. Distance skiers, who exert themselves to exhaustion in cold weather and often travel between varying altitudes and climates, are more prone to asthma, sore throats, and infection than most, and that some athletes must use asthma medications to compete is natural, writes Nordic ski journalist and race announcer Kjell Erik Kristiansen. Verbal sparring by top World Cup skiers following the 2010 Games suggest not everyone agrees. “I prepare in the ski tracks, Björgen at the pharmacy,” commented Poland’s Justyna Kowalczyk referring to Marit Björgen (Nor) who has asthma and is allowed to take medication.
