Austrians Jump to Victory

February 27, 2007 (Sapporo, Japan) – The Austrian team jumped to victory in Sapporo on Sunday with 1000.2 points. Austrian Wolfgang Loitzl also scored the biggest jump of the day at 133.5 metres. The Norwegians sewed up second place with 953.3 points while the Japanese (905.9) finished ahead of the Fins (869.8).

Among North Americans, the Canadian team finished eleventh with a score of 248.6 in a field of 12 teams. Team members include: Gregory Baxter, Graeme Gorham, Trevor Morrice, and Stefan Read. Read recorded a 110.5 metre jump.

Women ski jumpers are having a difficult time getting their sport recognized and no women’s ski jumping events are on the calendar at Sapporo. Women’s ski jumping has never been an Olympic sport, either.
