PORTLAND, ME (November 4, 2002) – Banknorth has assumed title sponsorship of the nonprofit New England Nordic Ski Association (NENSA) for the 2003 season. As the main sponsor, Banknorth will serve as lead supporter for more than 20 NENSA events this season. NENSA is the Olympic development organization for cross-country skiing in New England, providing year-round educational, recreational and competitive programs at all levels of cross-country skiing. Banknorth Group, Inc. is the third-largest retail and commercial banking company headquartered in New England.

“This is an important partnership for cross-country skiing in New England,” said John Upton, NENSA's President. “Banknorth will support programs for youth at the community level all over the region, while at the same time they will be helping our most talented athletes reach the Olympics. We are thrilled to have the support of such a respected New England financial services company.”

“We are excited to partner with NENSA and help bring their events and programs to the many New England people and communities that Banknorth serves,” said Rick Dempsey, Executive Vice President and Marketing Director, Banknorth Group, Inc. “This sponsorship is a wonderful way for Banknorth to deepen its community involvement and support activities that have a positive impact on families and people of all ages and skill levels.”

The Banknorth Marathon Series will hold events in Craftsbury, Vermont, Great Glen/Bretton Woods, N.H., and Rangeley, Maine. The Banknorth Eastern Cup series features eight cross-country ski races in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts, culminating in age-group championships in March. Other 2003 Banknorth championship events include the Banknorth New England Masters weekend, Banknorth New England Bill Koch League Festival, the Banknorth Eastern J2 Championships and the Banknorth Eastern High School Championships. NENSA's full calendar of winter events runs from December 14, 2002, through March 25, 2003.
