October 2, 2003 – Cross Country Canada and the National Cross-Country Ski Team, in partnership with the Canadian Olympic Committee and CODA, invite you attend an official Olympic medal presentation ceremony for Beckie Scott, Tuesday, October 21, 2003, at 10 a.m.
Scott's bronze medal in the 5k pursuit at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, will officially be upgraded to silver or gold in front of friends, invited guests and the public at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary. Canadian IOC member, Charmaine Crooks, and Michael Chambers, president, Canadian Olympic Committee, will present the medal to Beckie in the spirit of the Olympic Charter.
“This is an opportunity for all of Canada to join together in a celebration of excellence and achievement,” said Leopold Nadeau, president, Cross Country Canada. “We are encouraging parents and school teachers to bring their children to this event. Beckie's story is one that all Canadians should share and embrace; her dreams have turned to gold through a rare combination of talent, hard work and integrity.”
The day's events will officially kick off on a high note around 9:30 a.m. with live music by the Royal Canadian Artillery Band near the Olympic cauldron outside the main Daylodge at C.O.P. Other activities surrounding the medal presentation include: an athlete autograph session, activities and games; a fly pass of CF 18 Hornet Aircraft from 416 Tactical Fighter Squadron; free access to meet Canada's National Cross-Country Ski Team in the Blood, Sweat and Cheers exhibit in the Olympic Hall of Fame and Museum; and a public address from Beckie Scott.
In addition to the medal ceremony, an athlete meet and greet celebration will take place in the evening at the Olympic Hall of Fame and Museum at Canada Olympic Park, from 5-7 p.m. Scott and her teammates will be on-hand to sign autographs and take photos in a celebration of excellence that is open to the entire community at no cost. Come out and show your appreciation for Beckie's precedent-setting performance.
