July 16, 2008 (Oregon) – While Kristin Armstrong Savola (Cervelo-Lifeforce) killed the field recently at the Cascade Cycling Classic in Oregon that finished on Sunday, July 13, and Levi Leipheimer (Astana) ran away with the men’s title, top Nordic Combined star Bill Demong was on hand and was the subject of the stage race’s best human interest story.

Demong crashed about 2km from the end of Saturday’s (July 12) mountainous Stage 5 Cascade Lakes Road Race and was walking towards the finish area when Astana’s Chris Horner told him to “hop on” his bike. Demong couldn’t figure out what Horner meant but eventually jumped on Horner’s saddle with his bike in hand, and Horner stood up for the final 2km and brought Demong to the finish.
