Canada Winter Games 2003

by Matt Hansen
This year's Canada Games took place in the cities of Bathurst and Campbellton and surrounding communities in New Brunswick, and attracted 3,200 athletes from the 10 provinces and three territories competing in 21 different sports. The Canada Games are Canada's premier sport event, and, as such, attracted a highly competitive field for the ski races. This year saw an even more competitive field than in previous years as athletes who were named for the first time to the National Senior Ski Team for the 2002-2003 season were eligible to race, provided they had not participated in World Cup events before the Canada Winter Games.

The action got underway at the Charlo Les Aventuriers Ski Club with the men's 10K mass start on Feb. 24, won by Quebec's Vincent Renart in a time of 29.50, followed closely by Mike Argue (NWT) and Renart's teammate Jonathan Blais. On the women's side, Daria Gaiazova, who has been having a super-successful season skiing against the seniors, motored to finish the 7.5K race in 26:30, beating Alberta's Tara Whitten and B.C.'s Jacqui Benson.

The action continued the next day in the 900m sprint race final that was won by Ontario's Sean Crooks, followed by the consistent Renart and his teammate Jérémie Duchesne. After an impressive quarterfinal, Whitten took gold over Alberta's Chandra Crawford and Sarah Daitch (NWT).

The always-exciting 15K pursuit race picked up the following day and was handily won by Renart, who took his second gold in 38:55.9 over Kit Richmond (Alberta) and Argue (NWT). Gaiazova continued her winning ways in 29:06.100, over Whitten and Daitch.

The final day's competition saw the 4 x 5K relay and produced some tight, exciting results. In the men's race, Quebec Team 1 took top honours in 52:10, 16 seconds faster than Alberta Team 1 and 28 seconds faster than Ontario Team 1. In the women's competition, the result was inverted, with Alberta Team 1 finishing in 59:59.000 and beating Quebec Team 1, with Ontario Team 1 taking the bronze.

Despite a snowstorm that closed down the Games venues for half a day, followed by freezing rain and sub-artic temperatures, Les Adventuriers delivered a great event.
