Co-hosted by Justin Trudeau

February 21, 2007, Calgary, AB – Each year more and more skiers, snowboarders and snowmobilers head into the backcountry for an outdoor adventure. Providing the tools so they are avalanche aware is key to their safe return. The Canadian Avalanche Foundation (CAF) provides funding for public bulletins and education programs in avalanche safety and in developing these tools.

The cooperative efforts of the Canadian Avalanche Foundation, the Canadian Avalanche Centre and Parks Canada, has made Canada a world leader in public risk management. Initiatives started here in Canada are being implemented in the US, Switzerland, France and New Zealand – minimizing future avalanche fatalities around the world.

On February 24 in Calgary, the CAF will host it’s 4th annual fundraising dinner; made possible with support from sponsors such as Canadian Pacific Railway and Canetic Resources Trust.

The evening is co-hosted by Chris Stethem, president of the CAF and Justin Trudeau, a director with the CAF; and will feature guest speaker Dr. Joe MacInnis. MacInnis is a physician-scientist, explorer and author, who specializes in human performance in high-risk environments. He is an acclaimed deep-sea explorer, having led 30 expeditions into the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic Oceans, since 1964. He was an advisor to the Titanic Discovery Team and co-leader of a $5-million expedition to film Titanic in IMAX format.

Since its’ inception, the CAF has provided $388,000 to support public avalanche bulletins and other safety programs delivered by the Canadian Avalanche Centre. One important focus for the CAF is to support avalanche education initiatives for young winter backcountry enthusiasts, from elementary to high school levels, providing the basics needed to understand backcountry avalanche risks and enjoy safe mountain travels.
