March 28, 2012 (Montreal, QC) – The Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), today announced the Government of Canada’s contribution for 2012 to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

“Our Government is committed to worldwide efforts to eliminate doping in sport, and we are proud to be the host country of the World Anti-Doping Agency headquarters in Montréal,” said Minister of Sate Gosal. “This contribution helps ensure that Canada remains a worldwide leader in the fight against doping in sport”

“The Canadian Government has again made a significant financial contribution to WADA’s income for 2012, which is further proof of its ongoing commitment to the fight against drugs in sport,” said John Fahey, WADA President. “Doping in sport is no longer an issue confined to the sport movement; it is now an issue for society, and the Canadian Government’s contribution is clear recognition of this.”

WADA was created in 1999 with a mission to promote, coordinate, and monitor the international fight against doping in sport in all its forms. The WADA headquarters continues to be housed in Montréal, following an extension of their contract for another decade by the Harper Government in 2007. Canada plays a leadership role on WADA as a member of the Executive Committee and the Foundation Board.

The Government of Canada is committed to eliminating doping in sport and to ensuring that Canadians athletes compete on a safe and fair field of play. A contribution of more than $950,000 is being provided to WADA to help harmonize anti-doping policies, rules, and regulations for sport organizations and governments around the world. The Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec also supports WADA with a financial commitment extending to 2021. WADA’s presence in Montréal contributes to the city’s international reputation as a centre for business and knowledge.
