Canadian Riders Carry Olympic Torch on Days 1 and 2 – Reports, Photos, Video

by Steve Lund
October 31, 2009 (Victoria, BC) – Cycling BC Provincial Team riders were well represented again today as the Olympic Torch Relay continued through the Victoria region. On Friday Craig Logan was the first cyclist to carry the torch through the streets of View Royal. Later in the day National Team riders Erinne Willock and Max Plaxton took the torch by bike on their legs of the relay.

On Saturday Olympian Seamus McGrath was the first cyclist to carry the torch. He handed off to 16-year-old Team BC rider Annie Ewart who rode the torch along with her Team Aviawest teammates along Ocean Boulevard and into Fort Rodd Hill. Annie completed the first half of her 2.5 km ride with the torch in hand, but chose the specially made torch bike rack for the last bit of her ride that included a good climb and decent where hands on the bars was a good idea.

She was asked to slow up a bit on the hill and Team BC Coach Steve Lund lent a helping hand (by way of a push) as one of her escort police riders was having a tough time keeping up on the hill! The torch then made a loop around the park before being passed to another member of BC’s Canada Summer Games team, mountain biker Dan Scott.

The Olympic Torch leaves Victoria today, hopefully more Canadian riders will get there chance to carry it as it travels across Canada and back!

Olympic Torch Relay – Day 1
October 31, 2009 (Victoria, BC) – Team BC cyclist Craig Logan left his bike at home on Friday and went for a run… a run in front of thousands of people while carrying the torch for the 2010 Olympic Games. Logan was one of a select few chosen to carry the Olympic Torch on the first leg of it’s cross-country journey that started today in Victoria. Although his run was a short 300 meters, it ended at the View Royal Centennial Park where he was greeted by numerous dignitaries, town officials and a whole elementary school of children singing ‘Oh Canada’. In a post run interview, Logan said it was a great honor to be chosen to run with the Torch and a great inspiration to his own goal of competing at the Olympic Games. Watch the videos of Logan’s run below.

The Torch relay continues in and around Victoria on Saturday when another of Team BC’s brightest young stars Annie Ewart will be part of the Torch relay, but on her bike.
