January 29, 2010 – Clara Hughes, a member of the Specialized Mazda Samson women’s cycling team, will be carrying the Canadian flag at the opening ceremonies of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games. An official announcement is expected soon, but CBC has already reported that the honour will go to the Olympic medal winning cyclist and speed skater.
“This is fantastic!,” commented Gerard Penarroya, the manager of the Montreal-based Specialized Mazda Samson women’s cycling team. “She is the best possible choice for this honour.” Hughes is one of only a handful of athletes to have won medals at both the Summer (Atlanta, 1996) and Winter (Turin, 2006) Games.
