Craftsbury Marathon 2006 – Big Success

by Craftsbury Marathon/John Brodhead, Race Director

January 31, 2006 – Thanks for being part of the 25th annual event. We were fortunate again this year to have a full roster of 1,000 participants. We certainly had our doubts that we would be able to pull it off on the scheduled date, Saturday January 28th, considering the almost weekly meltdowns throughout January. Fortunately our dedicated trail grooming staff had spent literally 100’s of hours shoveling and plowing snow onto the trail since December giving us an almost indestructible base.

When decision time came on January 24th we were able to give the go-ahead on a modified course starting at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center, making use of the Craftsbury Outdoor Center’s intensive snow farming on a 20 kilometer loop, and finishing on Craftsbury Common.

The day was sunny and warm with spectacular starts on Lake Hosmer. The trail side feed stations provided by local inns and the general store were festive and provided delicious soups and home baked goodies.

Finishers were greeted with colorful banners and music on the Common. Over 150 volunteers provided friendly help as course marshals, food servers, and road crossing shovelers. The Marathon will be donating close to $7,000 US to local nonprofit groups who provided volunteers.
