Devon Kershaw rebounded from a crash in the qualifying event to dominate the day and claim the win. Jess Cockney finished second in the final, with Patrick Stewart-Jones, a first year senior, putting in a very strong performance against some of the best sprinters in Canada finishing third. Phil Widmer was fourth.
On the women’s side Chandra Crawford displayed strong classic sprinting skills in capturing the win, with Perianne Jones capturing silver. Alysson Marshall made a strong push at the finish to lunge past Dasha Gaizova for 3rd.
Qualifying Action:
Jess Cockney and Chandra Crawford finished first in the sprint qualifier event.
Crawford narrowly defeated Dasha Gaiazova, with a .4 second margin, and Perianne Jones was the 3rd qualifier in a field of 15 athletes.
On the men’s side Jess Cockney (6th in the 2011 U23 Worlds sprint event) was the top qualifier by over a second and a half ahead of Drew Goldsack, and Patrick Stewart-Jones was another second back in third.
In a bit of a surprise Devon Kershaw was 15th, over 17 seconds off the winning time after crashing in the qualifier, but he will be expected to move up in the heats when the racing really counts.
