Dasha Gaiazova Wins Silver Medal at Opa Cup in Italy

January 15, 2005 -Canada’s future Olympic cross-country skiers made their first strides towards the podium at the Opa Continental Cup on Sunday, with Montreal’s Dasha Gaiazova winning a silver medal in the women’s 5-kilometre free technique in Val di Fiemme, Italy.

Gaiazova led the Canadian squad after powering her way to the podium with a time of 14 minutes 03.1 seconds, just seven seconds off the leading pace set by Italy’s Veronica Cavallar (13:56.4). Italy’s Barbara Moriggl grabbed the final spot on the podium after posting a time of 14:06.2.

Madeleine Williams of Edmonton, who was the only other Canadian woman to hit the start line, finished in fifth spot (14:34.5).

The Italians dominated the men’s 10-kilometre free technique event, grabbing the top five positions. Thomas Moriggl was first to cross the line at 23:59.2, while Florian Kostner was second at 24:02.5, and Klaus Mariotti was third at 24:18.6

Drew Goldsack of Red Deer, Alta. was the top Canuck in the men’s division after completing the Italian track at 25:19.7. Other Canadian results included: Graham Nishikawa of Whitehorse, Yukon in 21st (25:47.9); David Nighbor of North Bay, Ont. in 22nd (26:02.2); and Adam Kates of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. in 23rd (26:18.5).
