FIS Junior Nordic Worlds Men’s 10km Classic – Golberg Claims Title

January 27, 2010 (Hinterzarten, Germany) –Paal Golberg of Norway won the Junior Worlds gold medal in the men’s 10km classic, adding to his silver medal from Monday’s sprints. Second and third went to the Russians, Evgeniy Belov, 9.6 seconds behind, and Petr Sedov, at +33.8 seconds.

Sedov was the quadruple junior world champion in Praz de Lys, France in 2009, and was the heavy favorite to win today’s event. Norway’s Finn Haagen Krogh was 6.9 seconds off the podium, in fourth. Japan’s Akira Lenting was a new face at the top of the results board, placing fifth at 42.5 seconds out of first. The team’s mastery of the classic technique is apparent, with team mate Hiroyuki Miyazaw finishing in 12th. Monday’s Sprint champ, Tomas Northug (NOR), was 11th.

For the North Americans, three U.S. and two Canadians were in the top 30. The USA’s Scott Patterson from Alaska matched his sister, Caitlin, who was 17th in the women’s 5km classic earlier in the day, with a time just +1:15.9 behind the winner. Sam Tarling was next, in 22nd, followed by Canadian’s Zach Holland in 24th, Joey Burton in 25th, then the USA’s David Norris in 29th. Patrick Stewart-Jones (CAN) was 31st, and teammate Andy Shields was 60th. The USA’s Tyler Kornfield, recent national Classic Sprint champ, finished 77th.

The FIS Junior Nordic Worlds Championships continue on January 29th with the men’s 20km and women’s 10km Pursuits.
