France Triumphs in Olympic Mixed Relay as Italy Takes Controversial Bronze – Team Canada 12th and USA 15th

February 20, 2018 (Pyeongchang, South Korea) – Team Canada finished 12th followed by the USA 15th in the Mixed Team Relay as France captured the gold in an exciting but controversial race at the Alpensia Biathlon Centre on Day 14 of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Games.

Double gold medalist Martin Fourcade became a triple gold medalist with a sterling anchor leg, carrying his French team of Marie Dorin Habert, Anais Bescond and Simon Desthieux to the win in the mixed relay.

Windisch cut in front of Peiffer in the finishing lanes resulting in a protest from Germany but after a 20-minute deliberation the judges ruled in favour of the Italian. It was a tough ending for the Germans as Peiffer squandered a 24-second lead on the final leg.

Rosanna Crawford was the lead-off Canuck as Susan Dunklee battled for the USA moving up to fourth as she tagged Joanne Reid in 5th while Crawford handed off to Julia Ransom in 11th. Italy had a nice lead over Germany, France and the Czech Republic.

By the second exchange Germany took over the lead courtesy of Laura Dahlmeier while Italy, Belarus and France chased from behind. Canada held on to 11th but the USA tumbled to 17th with three penalties for Reid.

Germany looked like they’d be unstoppable with a 30-second lead at Exchange 3 as France, Italy and Norway battled for the remaining medals while Canada’s Brendan Green dropped to 14th and the USA’s Tim Burke moved up to 16th.

On the final leg Peiffer’s 32-second lead dropped to six as he needed two spares in prone while Fourcade cleaned. Italy and Norway both needed a spare and were 16.4 seconds back in a battle for third. Fourcade passed Peiffer and cleaned the final standing to ensure the gold.

Svendsen cleaned with one spare to take over the silver spot while Windisch needed two spares as Peiffer suffered a penalty setting up a battle for bronze which the Italian won.–
