German Athlete Tests Positive at Sochi Olympics – First Doping Case of the Games

February 21, 2014 – A member of the German Olympic team in Sochi has tested positive for a banned substance, in what is the first doping case of the 2014 Games, reports the Associated Press today.

The identity of the athlete has not been revealed, nor has the athlete’s sport, although Stefan Schwarzbach, spokesman for the Germany’s cross-country and biathlon teams, told AP the athlete competes for Germany’s ski federation.

Schwarzbach revealed the athlete tested positive for a stimulant and that both the ‘A’ and ‘B’ samples have come back positive. Schwarzbach also told AP that the IOC has held a hearing regarding the case, and German officials are awaiting the full report before they can comment further.

Germany has won 16 medals in Sochi, including eight golds.

Since we filed this initial report Germany’s Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle, 33, was named later that day and kicked out of the Sochi Olympics as both her “A” sample and backup “B” sample were positive for the stimulant methylhexanamine following tests after the women’s biathlon mass start race on Feb. 17. The IOC said in a statement that she was disqualified from the mass start and her entire team had its fourth-place finish in the mixed relay canceled out. The Italian Olympic Committee announced that bobsledder William Frullani was also ejected from the Games on Feb. 21 after testing positive for the banned stimulant dimetylpentylamine.
