Get Waxed To Support Aspiring Ski Racers

provided by Canadian Ski Council

October 16, 2005 – Alpine Canada’s Pontiac GMC Ski Wax Days will be held across the country in support of Canada’s local ski clubs and future Olympians.

With ski season just around the corner, local ski clubs across Canada are inviting ski and snowboard enthusiasts to bring their equipment to the Wax Day in their area (See list of dates below). For a small donation, amateur alpine ski racers will wax their skis and snowboards. Last year more than 1000 skis and boards were waxed, raising over $30,000 for the ski clubs. This year, the goal is to wax 1500 skis and boards.

“Wax Days are a great way to get local ski clubs interacting with the community and raise much-needed funds to support the clubs racing activities,” said Ken Read, President Alpine Canada Alpin. “Some of these racers represent the future of Alpine ski racing in Canada. Come get your skis and boards tuned-up for what promises to be a great winter season and help support the development of these aspiring Champions.”

All proceeds raised from these community events will aid ski clubs in various pursuits: purchasing new training equipment, hosting races and helping local athletes pursue their dreams. Participants at each location are eligible to enter to win an Atomic prize package worth $250 and a race bib autographed by the Canadian Alpine Ski Team.

Pontiac GMC Ski Wax Days is an exciting opportunity for local communities to prepare for the upcoming ski season and support neighborhood athletes. The events are run entirely by provincial ski clubs, and are made possible due to the generous support of Alpine Canada Alpin and local Pontiac GMC Dealers.

“General Motors has a longstanding history of supporting Canadian communities and youth through amateur sport,” said Tom Laurie, Manager of Sponsorships & Promotions, GM of Canada. “Our association with Alpine Canada Alpin is one example of our passion for community involvement. We are pleased that the Pontiac GMC Cup is part of a winning strategy focused on results.”

GM of Canada is the official sponsor and exclusive vehicle provider for Alpine Canada Alpin and the nation’s premier developmental alpine racing series – the Pontiac GMC Cup. For almost two decades, GM of Canada has supported the development of elite amateur ski racers in Canada. The Pontiac Cup Series from 1969 to 1981 produced Canadian international skiing greats and Olympic medalists, such as Alpine Canada Alpin president Ken Read, and World Cup champions Laurie Graham, Steve Podborski, Todd Brooker and Kathy and Laurie Kreiner.
