Haywood Report : Kimberley Camp

provided by Graham Nishikawa

August 30, 2005 – I am flat on my back on the shoulder of the highway and my head hurts. One second ago I was focusing on my two skate technique, when a rock jammed the front wheel of my rollerski and I went down in a blur. After a few seconds I could see straight again and I quickly got up and looked around, embarrassed, to see if anyone had seen me. Luckily, none of my teammates were around. Up until that point I had been having a miserable training session. I was feeling tired, my pole tips were slipping on the pavement after every push, but mostly I was just having a bad day. After cursing like a sailor at the rock and my skis and swinging my poles around for a few minutes, I looked up and saw the picturesque landscape of Kimberley all around me and realized how stupid I was. I am lucky to be able to train in new and beautiful locations, and I should not be freaking out about a crash, especially since I was not badly hurt. I skied off and finished the workout. Looking back, that ski will probably be the most memorable workout that I had at the Kimberley camp.

Team 2014 joined forces with Team 2010 and we all headed to the small resort town of Kimberly, British Columbia for a seven day training camp. The plan of action was to get in some quality training hours, at the same time focusing on speed and technique. The week was filled with double training sessions each day interspersed with leisurely activities including swimming, Frisbee and mini put.
