Haywood Report: The Latest Intensity

by Brent McMurtry

October 19, 2005 – With the temperatures getting colder and colder and days becoming shorter it is an obvious sign that winter is well on its way. This means that the upcoming ski season is well on its way. The first World Cup races are this weekend with a sprint and sprint relay in downtown Düsseldorf on snow that is made inside. There is also just a little over a month until the race season kicks off in Silver Star with the first Canada Cups of the year.

With the fast approaching ski season we are doing final preparation and starting to crank up the amounts of intensity being done ion day-to-day training. The last two weeks for me has included on running race, two rollerski races, two rollerski time trials, and two intensity sessions. That works out to a hard workout every other day. With doing so much intensity it is vital to try to remain as rested as possible to allow yourself to maximize each session.

On Saturday the National ski team competed in the Banff Mountain Ekiden. This race is a relay composed of five legs ranging from 5 to 12 kilometers. This race is one that is run in every year by the National Team. This year we had two mixed teams racing.

Team one: Drew Goldsack, Sean Crooks, Chandra Crawford, Perianne Jones, Dave Nighbor

Team two: Brent McMurtry, Philip Widmer, Amanda Ammar, Dasha Gaiazova, Graham Nishikawa

The teams finished first and second (team two winning the battle between our two teams) in the mixed category and fifth and seventh overall.

We all are hoping for snow, as everyone is excited about the upcoming season.

Until next time, Brent McMurtry
