Introducing The New CCC Board Directors

May 14, 2004 – In accordance with the new CCC By-Laws (Ministerial approval granted November 21, 2003), a new Board of Directors was elected at a Special General Meeting of the voting members of the Corporation on March 8, 2004.  The composition of the new Board allows for both renewal and continuity in the governing of CCC.
 
Bruce Alexander Bruce has a long accomplished career in law within both the public and private sectors.  He is currently Vice-Chair of the Ontario Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal.  He has served  within the Ontario Public Service namely as Assistant Deputy Minister for the Ministries of Community and Social Services and Transportation and Communications.  Over the years he has been actively involved with a number of non-profit community and sport organizations.  Bruce is an enduring and  renowned sport activist, notably as a member of the Board of Directors of the Spirit of Sport Foundation.  Our organization will greatly benefit from Bruce's guidance and leadership.
Margaret Barron Margaret has a strong background in advanced education (physical education, recreation and kinesiology) and working/volunteering with non-profit groups. She has acquired a down-to-earth understanding of sport participation through her professional work, namely at Memorial University (Newfoundland). Margaret has also been involved as volunteer support staff for our National Disabled Cross Country Ski Team for the past four years.  Margaret's keen enthusiasm for skiing and strong desire to contribute to the positive growth of Canada's Cross-Country Skiing Community will make her a solid contributor to the Board.
Tom McCarthy Tom, as co-founder and team member of XC Ottawa – an elite cross-country ski team in the Ottawa-Gatineau region – is well prepared for his role of Athlete Director.  Tom holds an Honours Bachelor Degree of Public Affairs and Policy Management and is pursuing a Masters degree in Public Policy at Simon Fraser University.  His fresh perspective and enthusiasm will undoubtedly be a source of inspiration.
Tony Daffern Tony is past president of CCC and has been involved in all levels of the organization since the early 1980s.  He helped organize the Competition Committee for the 1988 Olympics and was Competition Secretary during the Games.  He is a level 4 Technical Delegate and has been Chief of Competition for many events, including National Championships, World Masters and World Juniors.  A long-time cross country advocate, Tony is currently working with the other winter sports and the Canadian Olympic Committee in the development and implementation of an Own the Podium 2010 plan.
Léopold Nadeau As continuing President, Léopold bring a broad knowledge and understanding of  the challenges facing our Association.  His involvement as community coach, club president, division treasurer and race organizer makes him well aware of the growth potential of our cross-country skiing community, but also of the obstacles to collective progress.  Father of two active athletes, Léopold has an intimate knowledge of the enjoyment and hardship brought by the pursuit of elite racing.  His background as geologist and research scientist makes him inquiring and constantly looking for alternative approaches and new solutions.
Jonas Sandström Jonas is a family physician, a loppet racer and a “cross-country ski activist” with the Black Jack Ski Club in Rossland, British Columbia.  His addiction to cross-country skiing dates back to his childhood in rural Sweden.  Jonas brings a strong understanding of recreational, competitive and high performance racing.  He is committed to the growth of cross country skiing in Canada and the success of our National Team in 2010.
Herbert Urton Herbert brings a broad range of experience on business matters and international marketing.  As a past Director of the Cross Country
Saskatchewan Board, and activist of the Saskatchewan Malamute racing club, he is well aware of the challenges facing the development of our sport in smaller communities across Canada.  Herbert is actively involved in high performance sports with his wife and three sons in cross-country skiing, cycling, and running.  Herbert is committed to building a strong and proud ski community from coast to coast to coast.
Diane Thomson Diane Thomson brings over 25 years of active involvement in the cross-country ski community.  As a national and FIS certified technical delegate and a past chair of the CCC Events Committee she has strong ties with the skiers across the country.  Her passion for our sport and the people involved with our sport, combined with her willingness to serve makes
her keen to contribute to the future directions of our Association.
