Job Opportunity at Canadian Sport Institute Ontario – Lead, Physiology, Performance Services

July 2, 2014 (Toronto, ON) – The position of Lead, Physiology is responsible for strategically, operationally and technically leading the Physiology (including SportLab) team within the Performance Services department of CSI Ontario. In addition the position provides physiology support to targeted National and Provincial Sport Organizations.

The Lead, Physiology will utilize their education and extensive background in high performance sport settings to play a leading role in the ongoing development of world class physiological services at CSI Ontario. The Lead, Physiology will manage and support the Physiology (including SportLab) team to run coach led, performance focused support programs that help high performance athletes perform optimally during training and competition.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities Sport Delivery (~50%):
1.    The development and delivery of physiological services to targeted National Sport Organizations (NSOs) and Provincial Sport Organizations (PSOs) in the daily training environment
2.    The development and delivery of physiological services to targeted NSOs/PSOs on trainingcamps or competitions (national/international)
3.    Interpretation of data and development of data reports to provide evidence to support and inform
coach and athlete training decisions
4.    Work collaboratively as part of Integrated Support Team(s) (IST) to provide a holistic approach to
injury prevention and performance enhancement
5.    Facilitate ongoing communication with allocated training group coaches/high performance
directors and athletes to implement long-term IST plans

Managerial (~35%):
1.    As part of the overall Performance Services plan, lead the creation of an integrated discipline specific operational plan with clear outcome metrics and quality assurance measures
2.    Lead the recruitment and technical development of a high performing Physiology (including SportLab) team
3.    Provide effective leadership and support to the Physiology (including SportLab) team including sport assignments, performance reviews and work plans (currently 5 staff)
4.    Identify and facilitate a proactive approach to Professional Development (Pro-D) programs for the Physiology (including SportLab) team, including both group and individual Pro-D programs
5.    In conjunction with CSIOs Research and Innovation (R&I) Lead, drive discipline R&I projects; including staff R&I as well as conducting, collaborate and/or commissioning relevant performance enhancing R&I projects

Organizational (~15%)
– Undertake any other reasonable duties as requested by the Director, Sport Science & Sport Medicine (SSSM).
Position Links and Dimensions
– Works closely with the CEO, Directors, SS/SM staff, PSOs, NSOs, coaches and athletes at all levels; Provides leadership and management for direct reports; Works with other staff, partners, and sport groups on projects as required.
– Work as part of the Performance Services ‘Leads Team’ to shape the overall business units
direction and operation
– Maintain a proactive approach to personal Professional Development (Pro-D)
– Participate in company staff meetings and attends other meetings and seminars as required;
– Act within the scope of the governing policies of CSI Ontario and within the scope of other laws,
rules and regulations that apply to CSI Ontario;

Working conditions/Special Requirements
– Requires a Class G Driver’s license and some travel. Must be able to work in a highly dynamic and flexible client service environment. Required to work irregular hours and be on-call for emergencies for time sensitive and priority issues.

QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE

Education, Experience and Certification
Required:
•    Master’s degree in Physiology or closely related discipline and a minimum 8 years’ experience
in the delivery of Physiological services to national and/or professional sports/athletes, with proven international results.
Or
•    PhD in Physiology or closely related discipline and a minimum 6 years’ experience in the
delivery of Physiological services to national and/or professional sports/athletes, with proven
international results.

AND

Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) Certified Exercise Physiologist (CEP) or ability to obtain within 3 months Phlebotomy trained to take finger and vena-puncture samples or ability to obtain within 3 months A verifiable record of working within a multi-disciplinary team in the delivery of Physiology services to high performance sport.

Preferred:
•    Line management experience of high performing staff
•    Experience of providing Physiological support at major international games (Olympics, Paralympics, World Championships, Commonwealth, Pan Ams)
•    International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK) certified to level 1 or higher
•    High performance sport research experience, including presenting at scientific conferences and symposiums
•    Knowledge of the Canadian High Performance Sport System
