Kern and Hanneman Lead US Podium Sweeps at Haywood NorAm Buff CL Sprints / USSA SuperTour – Canada’s Mehain and Williams Top Junior Fields

December 10, 2016 (Vernon, BC)  – US skiers dominated the opening round of the Haywood NorAm Buff Sprints which also doubled as round #2 of the USSA SuperTour. Held at Silver Star the 1.2 CL Sprint saw American Julia Kern (SMS T2) win the Open Women’s race while APU’s Reese Hanneman from Alaska cruised to victory in the Open Men’s race.

Elizabeth Guiney and Kaitlyn Miller round out the US podium barely edging out top Canada’s Olivia Bouffard-Nesbitt (AWCA) who was the top qualifier by over two seconds. In the final, Bouffard-Nesbitt had a large lead at the top of the saddle climb and maintained that to the finishing straight were the three American skiers overpowered her in the double pole dash to the finish.

Hanneman led a US podium sweep in the men’s race after qualifying 15th. Cole Morgan (Sun Valley SEF) and Ben Saxton (SMS Elite Team) rounded out the podium. Denver U’s resident German Moritz Madlener was fourth ahead of Matt Gelso (Sun Valley), who precipitated a big semifinal crash that left Antoine Briand as the only Canadian in the A final ending up 6th.

In the junior women’s race, Sovereign Lake’s own Hannah Mehain dominated the qualifier by 6.3 seconds and comfortably won all three heats to take her first win of the season. Nakkertok’s Claire Grall-Johnson finished second ahead of Katie Weaver. Denver University’s Taeler McCrerey was to top US skier in 5th.

Telemark’s Gareth Williams was in dominant form in the junior men’s race winning the qualifier and all three heats to easily own the day. Graham Ritchie and Levi Nadlersmith filled out the podium with APU’s Canyon Tobin the only American in the A Final.
