by skitrax.com
April 28, 2011 – U.S. Ski Team member Kikkan Randall is currently enjoying some well-deserved vacation time in Hawaii after a long competitive XC ski season, which included World Cup medals and a top 10 in the overall World Cup standings. According to Randall’s Twitter feed, she’s not slacking off and sitting on the couch. She has been staying active, spending a lot of time on the bike, as well as canoeing and paddle boarding. She recently cycled up one of Hawaii’s tallest peak, Haleakala at 3, 055m / 10,023 feet.

Haleakala is the highest peak on Maui but not the highest in Hawaii, which is Mauna Kea on the Big Island at 4205 meters or 13,000+ feet. Mauna Loa is also taller than Haleakala. In any case climbing up it is one tough climb! Most tourists drive up it to ride down! Way to go, Kikkan!

    Hi John,

Thanks for the clarification… we were excited with the news and got ahead of ourselves. But as you point out it’s still one heckofa climb and we’re cheering for KR as well. Aloha…

    Cheers,

Did this trek on roller skis about 10-12 years ago (maybe more)—was in Hawaii for Doug Pettersen’s (ex-USST skier I coached) wedding and early one mrng ( 6am-to beat the traffic and heat) I started at the turn-off junction at the bottom of the mtn. You know Hawai (ideal climate)i, there I was in shorts and a cut-off t-shirt, with my wife as my support person in our rental car. This became one scary roller ski effort—lots of climbing and one switcback after another. Got off to a good start and was enjoying myself—and then in rolled a rain storm and winds like you can’t believe—blowing my poles all over the place—switchbacks to the left were into the wind—those to right is where I had tail winds—but the big dilemma was how cold it was. I finally hit my 1st food station and was more interested in getting into more clothes–windbreaker I just happen to throw in the car saved my butt—no long tights of any sort. I thought I was going to have to quit from hypothermic conditions, but the storm disappear in time to get back to saner conditions.
On I went—and the hit the official entrance into the park and that was the end of my day—what pissed me off was that the park official classified me as a roller blader—and of course they had never seen roller skis—and nothing I could say would get me thru. So, into the car and to the top to see the infamous “Silversword flower” and the only place it grows in the world.
Needless to say a Park car passed us before we reached the top—I have a feeling that they had a feeling I may have gone around the corner and resumed skiing. I’d had enough—so, they didn’t have to worry.
The Canadian team should give it a try when they are there this summer—actually you can start lower and really make it a workout. I’d talk to park officials about getting into the park, so they can go to the top.
