McKeever Continues Great Peformance

January 21, 2004 – Brian McKeever, of Canmore, won his second gold medal at the Nordic Disabled World Cup Skiing in Tannheim, Germany. McKeever was competing in the 10 km classic race for visually impaired.  Frank Hofle of Germany was second and Irek Mannanov of Russia was third. McKeever finished in 31:47.8. He was ahead of  Hofle by 58.0  and 1:15.4 ahead of  Mannanov.

Bourgonje won bronze in the 5 km sit ski race. Colette Bourgonje returned to her old sled that she won two silver medals in the Nagano Paralympics. Bourgonje time was 20:15.6. Maria Whyte, of Hinton, Alberta, finished in fourth place 52.3 seconds behind the winner.  In first place was Candace Cable of the USA in 16:39.6. Olena Yurkovska of Ukraine was second.

Jean-Thomas Boily, of Mt. Orford Quebec, was in 5th place 38.7 seconds behind the leader in the 10 km men's sit ski. Ruepp of Italy finished in first place followed by Sergey Shilov and Mikhail Terentiev of Russia. Ruepp finished the 10 km race in 27:36.9.

In Saturday's competition, McKeever was gold in the 5 km free skate, Shauna Maria Whyte of Hinton Alberta was in 3rd place and Colette Bourgonje was in fourth place, in the 2.5 km. Jean-Thomas Boily was in 5th place in the 5 km men's sit ski competition.

The next competition for the Canadian Team is Tuesday January 20 with the Sprint 1 km free technique cross country. The first World Cup was to have taken place in Isny but had to move to Tannheim, because the weather conditions were not good enough.  The biathlon competition was also cancelled.  All biathlon competitions will be replaced with cross-country-competitions.
