Nordic Combined and Ski Jumping Season Opener Races in Ruka Cancelled Due to High Wind

release by FIS

November 28, 2015 (Ruka, Finland) – Due to the wind situation, the first 2015/16 Nordic Combined Individual Gundersen competition of the weekend in Ruka had to be cancelled. The wind conditions proved to be unstable since early morning and so it was not possible to complete a training and competition round.

Race Director Lasse Ottesen commented, “Unfortunately today’s opening event in Ruka had to be cancelled. Since 8 o’clock this morning we have tried to complete a training and a competition round but the wind was simply too strong. We are looking forward to the second competition day tomorrow and hope that we can complete one Individual Gundersen event.”

Below is a release on the FIS Ski Jumping web site…

After the training and qualification in Kuusamo/Ruka had to be canceled already on Thursday due to the too strong wind, the conditions remained extremely difficult on Friday as well.

The wind was strong at the hill in the far north of Finland all day. The wind speeds then decreased in the afternoon, as predicted in the weather forecast, and so the jury decided to postpone the start of the training round various times.

Shortly before 6:00 pm CET (7:00 pm LOC) it was finally decided to cancel the program (training and individual competition) for the day. The conditions improved, but they were still not good enough.

The new schedule for Saturday was announced after a team captain’s meeting on Friday evening…
