Northug vs Hellner in Vegas

by Jesse Winter

June 27, 2010 – What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas…unless you’re a world class ski racer, that is. For Peter Northug and Marcus Hellner every card dealt and hand played at the World Series of Poker (WSOP), the world’s largest poker tournament with  $350 million at stake, will be scrutinized by poker fans and the world of cross-country skiing, thanks in large part to Northug’s major sponsor, the Norwegian men’s magazine Vi Menn (We Men).

According to the publication, which is footing the $10,000 WSOP entry fee to bring the duo to Vegas July 3-6, Northug and Hellner  will be among an estimated 6,000+ competitors vying for a shot a shot at the prize purse. As well as the casino action, there will also be a rollerski race featuring Northug and Hellner on July 5, taking place at the famous Palms Hotel & Casino to add excitement to the venture. “This is a real prestige duel,” said Vi Menn’s chief editor and director, Alexander Øystå.

While there have been Swedes at past WSOP final tables, there has never been a Norwegian and apparently Northug has big ambitions. “I’ve been playing poker a few years, and my dream has always been to play in the ‘big one’. Now the dream has come true, thanks to my sponsor We Men,” said Northug.
