Passion for Skiing: A History of Skiing Origins at Dartmouth College

release by Plesser Holland Associates
April 26, 2010 –  Passion for Skiing is a new book by Stephen Waterhouse (Dartmouth ’67) that looks at the history development of skiing over the past 100 years. It also shows the extent to which Dartmouth College has impacted skiing and its resulting industry around the globe. Dartmouth College took an early leadership role in making skiing more than just a mode of transportation. Now, Dartmouth has more members of the National Ski Hall of Fame, National ski racing champions, and Winter Olympians than any other institution.

The book highlights the activities of individuals who have created what is now the biggest ski jump in New England; helped develop the first rope tow, overhead cable lift and chair lift; organized the first slalom, giant slalom and downhill race; started many of the ski resorts and designed most of the ski mountain layouts in the United States; initiated modern extreme skiing; led skiing activities in the Olympics and more.
