Renner Scores Early Season World Cup Points

Saturday, December 7, 2002, Davos, Switzerland – Canadian National Teammember and two-time Olympian Sara Renner scored her first world cup pointsof the year today when she placed 29th in the 10 km skate cross-country skirace held in Davos, Switzerland.The twenty-six year old Canmore native, who got three top-20 results at theWinter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City last February, finished in 28:18.2.”I am relieved that I’m racing faster this weekend,” says Renner. “It feelsgood to be at altitude again.”Teammate and Olympic Medallist Beckie Scott came in 15th today (27:37.2) ina closely packed finishing line-up led by last weekend’s world cup winnerBente Skari of Norway (26:39.5). Estonian powerhouse Kristina Smigun wasousted from the gold again, finishing less than 3 seconds from Skari. Thebronze went to Italian Olympic medallist Gabriella Paruzzi (27:01.4).Fellow Canadian teammate Milaine Theriault, who just arrived in Europe daysago, finished 63rd.In the men’s 15 km skate race, Swede Mathias Frederickson edged out earlyseason gold medallist Vincent Vittoz from France by a mere 2 seconds.Frederickson time of 36:05.9 was also less than 9 seconds ahead of bronzemedallist Fulvio Valbusa of Italy. Justin Wadsworth of the American teamcame in 22nd in a time of 37:21.7. Wadsworth is the only malerepresentative from North America currently competing on the world cupcircuit.The Davos World Cup series continue with the Relay events.
