Review of Atlantic Provinces Training Camp 2005

provided by Ian Murray

July 20, 2005 – An awesome Atlantic Canada cross-country ski training camp was held recently in Bathurst NB. Atlantic Canada training camps have been an annual fixture since the summer of 1992 and are always a great way to create enthusiasm for young and old racers and coaches. This one was no exception!

The highlight of the camp, as it should be, were the people: 25 athletes and coaches from the four provinces of New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and Nova Scotia. The main coach, Les Parsons from Club Nordique Monte-Sainte-Anne, was super in sharing his outlook and knowledge of the sport.

Other highlights of the camp, in the order we did them:
· Swimming triathlon technique training in the Baie de Chaleur
· Dreams, goals and positive attitude seminar
· Water running followed by diving off the cliffs in the canyon
· Stretching & flexibility
· Rollerskiing on the perfect Asphalt at the race track
· Potato cannon
· Elite athlete lifestyle seminar: how to eat, drink and sleep like an Olympic athlete
· More deep water running
· Running and hiking with ski poles: different techniques to develop arm strength
· Team ball relays on the beach and chuck wagon races in the water
· Designing training programs and principals of training seminar
· Barbecue, party and music performances from many athletes on piano, violin, fiddle, dancing, harmonica, flute and everyone singing the national anthem in either french or english
· National strength test and encouragement
· Sport massage seminar

It was amazing that Suzanne and Gilles Landry hosted all of us at their place in Bathurst. I would like to thank them on behalf of all attendees.

The next Atlantic Canada cross-country ski training camp will be held at the end of august in Charlo, New Brunswick. It is open to anyone keen to improve their racing or coaching. Les Parsons will again be the guest coach. Please contact Suzanne Landry (slandry@reg6.health.nb.ca) or your Atlantic Canada provincial ski coach for more information.
