Ski Jumping Team Nominated to the 2010 Canadian Olympic Team

release by Nordic Combined Ski Canada
January 25, 2010 (Calgary, AB) – Ski Jumping Canada is proud to announce that the following athletes have been nominated to the Canadian Olympic Committee to represent Canada in ski jumping at the Vancouver 2010 Canadian Olympic Games:  Stefan Read (age 22), Mackenzie Boyd-Clowes (age 18), Trevor Morrice (age 18) and Eric Mitchell (age 17). All four athletes are from Calgary, Alta. The Coaches of the team were also announced and include Tadeusz (Ted) Bafia and Gregor Linisg.

The athletes will compete in both the Individual and team competition and it is the second straight Olympic Games that Canada has fielded a full team in Olympic Ski jumping competition. The only returning athlete from the 2006 Turin team is Stefan Read, who is the veteran of this young squad.

The announcement took place at the Olympic Hall of Fame in Canada Olympic Park in Calgary. Brent Morrice, Chairman, Ski Jumping Canada noted “how appropriate it is to make the announcement at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary, where their Coach Ted Bafia competed in the 1988 Olympic Games and where all of the athletes live and train.” All four athletes belong to the Altius Nordic Ski Club based in Calgary.

Gene Edworthy of the Canadian Olympic Committee presented the four athletes with their official Hbc Canadian team jackets, noting that they should “wear them proudly because they belong to what will be the most successful Canadian Olympic team ever.”

The press conference also featured special guest, Cam Hodgson, Principal of the National Sport School in Calgary. Hodgson congratulated the athletes – three of them are in grade 12 and the other is a graduate of the school – for overcoming the difficulties of travelling constantly to train and compete while completing their high school. Ski Jumping Canada is grateful to the National Sport School for making it possible.

The team will now head to Park City, Utah for final training before travelling to Vancouver for the Games.
