Snow Finally Hits the East and Brings Some Relief

by John Symon

January 17, 2007 (Montreal, QC) – A snowstorm Sunday and Monday dropped up to 30 cms of snow over parts of New England, New York, Ontario, and Quebec. This certainly helped x-c centres in the northeast—a region plagued by lack of snow so far this winter. But the closed centres still outnumber the open centres throughout the whole region and the snow bases remain thin, almost everywhere according to the website, Snowcountry.com.

Mont Sainte Anne, just east of Quebec City, now has 136 kms of trails open out of a network of 212 kms. The resort’s website reports: “Great snow conditions of powder on a firm base!” Three other Quebec centres are grooming their trails, including Gatineau Park, Camp Mercier, and Parc national de la Gaspésie. Snowcountry.com indicates that Duchesnay and Mont Tremblant Park centres are also open, but that trails there are not groomed.

SkiTrax contacted the Aerobic Corridor in Morin-Heights which has about 25 kms groomed trails open north of Montreal. Spokesperson Sylvie Bouffard explained: “We’ve been open since about December 2nd, in part thanks to our expert trail grooming.”

Some five Ontario centres are reported operating today, including Hardwood Hills with 16 km kms of trails open. Another six centres are reported still closed, including Haliburton.

Vermont reportedly has 11 centres operating, including Bolton Valley with 100 kms open. Another 18 centres remain closed there.

In New Hampshire, six centres were reported operating, including The Balsams with 76 kms of trails open, while another 11 centres reported insufficient snow.

Maine has six centres operating today, including Bethel Inn with 20 kms of trails open while another 10 centres remain closed.

New York reportedly has three centres operating today, including the Olympic Sports Complex with 30 kms of trails open, but not groomed. Another 11 centres remain closed.
