St. Scholastica Ski Team Announces 2011 Recruiting Class

release by St. Scholastica Ski Team

June 16, 2010 (Duluth, MN) – For the second straight year, the St. Scholastica Ski Team will take in it’s strongest, deepest recruiting.

Headlining an impressive women’s group is Canadian National Team Development Center (NTDC) skier, Christina Groulx from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.  Groulx has chosen to try NCAA skiing south of the border after a difficult season with the Thunder Bay-based NTDC program, focusing on her education degree at CSS.  She will enter St. Scholastica as a sophomore transfer from Lakehead University in Thunder Bay.

Incoming freshmen Brooke Adams of Sarona, WI (Spooner High School), and Kathryn Van Every of Ely, MN, should also have an immediate competitive impact for the Saints.  Adams has been one of the top juniors in the upper Midwest for the past several years and was the Wisconsin State High School freestyle champion in 2010.  Van Every was among the top Minnesota high school skiers in 2010, finishing 6th in the Minnesota State High School Ski Meet.   Along with Groulx, the two freshmen will add scoring depth to top returners, senior Julia Curry, and junior Eleanor Magnuson.

2010 Koretloppet champion, Scott Johanik, of Washburn, WI, leads a talented group of incoming freshmen men.  Joining Johanik are top upper Midwest junior skiers and fellow Midwest Junior Olympic Team members, Nick Power of Duluth (Marshall School), and Paul Schommer of Appleton, WI.  Johanik and Schommer were standouts in the 2010 Wisconsin State High School Skiing Championships.  The quartet will challenge for varsity spots on the men’s side led by top returners, seniors Waylon Manske and Mason Bacso, and sophomores Kasey Bacso and Jeremy Hecker.

I am very excited with this group,” said Saints head coach, Chad Salmela.  “We have a lot of experience in the new skiers, but I also see a lot of potential in many of the skiers that may not be as obvious at the moment, which is what gets me excited as a coach.  The depth of both men’s and women’s team will be enormous this coming winter.”
