Summertime in the Callaghan Valley

by Zach Caldwell
We’ve had spectacular weather out here for the past month or so. One of the locals that I talked to said “yeah – it can be like this. Maybe once every ten years or so.” So we’re trying to enjoy it really hard. I don’t mean we’re trying hard – you don’t need to try hard. We’re enjoying hard. Can you do that?

Kris Freeman and Dan Roycroft are out here currently. This is Kris’s first intensity camp of the year – he’ll be back here with the USST in September, and they’ll be in Lake Placid in October for more. Dan came out to bang heads with Kris, and apparently to show us how to use a rope swing.

Yesterday morning was a nice rollerski out on Alta Lake road, and finishing up on Stonebridge road in Whistler. Good terrain, and not much traffic. As Dan said, “half the cars that passed us were Zach.” The afternoon was easy – an hour run for Kris, and supposedly off for Dan. But we decided to have a Brohm Lake adventure, and hiked in from the backside – along Paradise Valley Road so as not to contest the Parking tournament on route 99. It turned-out to be about an hour hike to the lake, with some of the crew in sandels. After taking rope-swinging to new heights, Dan ran back to get the van, allowing the rest of us an easy 20 minute stroll out to the highway.
