Supercamp XC Ski Fall News

release by Supercamp

August 29, 2014 (Vernon, BC) – It is fall on the mountain. The leaves are tinted red, the huckleberries are ripe and plentiful. Registrations have been coming in from far and wide with 5 Canadian provinces, 6 US states; a total of  four countries and three continents represented. Alaska is leading the American charge with Alberta topping our Canadian stats. It is pretty exciting to see so many people looking forward to the winter ahead.

Biathlon seems to be many campers “target” for this season. Registration for full week biathlon programs will be posted this week (limited availability). We will also be offering an afternoon in the range. Biathlon is a great way to learn control over you breathing and adds a whole new dimension to our winter passion.

We look forward to seeing you on the snow.

Dirtbiking for xc skills improvement? Surely Coach Bruno has gone mad! And most likely fat and out of shape. But doubt no more, I will prove to you that dirtbiking can help improve your xc skiing!!!

Today I went trail riding in West Kelowna – and not only did it challenge my focus (you must stay present and look ahead all the time) – it proved to be quite the strength work out and did it ever require good balance!!

But I did talk about all those qualities last year when I was praising the merits of downhill biking for xc skiers. So today I want to talk about how learning how to crash can help your xc skiing!!! Because let’s face it, I’ve been crashing a lot on this mean machine!

How many corners do we “nearly miss” in the winter? How many times do we get going too fast and the only way to avoid another skier is the voluntary bail? How many of us have injured ourselves in a fall when xc skiing? It actually happens more than we think! The problem is that most xc skiers are ridiculously good at staying on their feet so when the inevitable fall strikes, they don’t know how to react; they actually try to protect themselves from the impact and often end up hurting a lot more. So here are my 2 pieces of advice about falling:

1. Hit the eject button! If you know you’re going to fall, try leaping or jumping. Be active about your fall; take control instead of being a passive victim. Chances are if you dictate how your body takes off, your body will know how to control the landing. A smoother landing usually means way less damage.

2. Tuck and roll. If it takes you by surprise and you don’t have time to leap, try to roll with it. When I worked as a physio, 90% of the broken arms and clavicles we treated were the result of trying to break a fall with an outstretched arm. Abort the “slowing down mission” and tuck those long levers in instead and let your body roll upon impact. It is a much safer way to disperse those nasty forces. I know I know, counterintuitive when all we want to do is protect this beautiful nose`. But unless you have a nose the size of Pinocchio’s, your torso will hit the ground first.

So… still not sure how dirtbiking is improving my xc skills? Try this:
If getting injured means loss of fitness while pouting on the couch, and dirtbiking teaches me how to fall properly so I can stay injury-his winter , therefore dirtbiking helps my xc skiing.
