March 11, 2005 – Just two weeks into the “2 years and counting” kick-off, the Whitehorse 2007 Canada Winter Games Host Society rolled out the red carpet for the Games’ first Major Sponsor headquartered outside of Yukon. TransCanada officially joined the team at a reception held Monday evening in Calgary’s Petroleum Club.

TransCanada will be providing a cash contribution of $350,000 to the Whitehorse 2007 Canada Winter Games in exchange for benefits which include: industry category exclusivity; medal presentation opportunities; significant advertising in association with the 2007 Games and the rights to logos and mascots. TransCanada’s contribution will continue their ongoing support for youth and excellence in all capacities.

Paul Flaherty, VP Sponsorship for the Host Society said the Games’ organizers are extremely pleased and honoured that TransCanada has chosen to be a part of “what will surely go down in history as the most prestigious sporting event ever held in Northern Canada. This is a momentous occasion,” continued Flaherty, “to have one of Canada’s most-respected corporations on our team.”

“TransCanada is proud to play a lead role in the 2007 Winter Games,” said Hal Kvisle, TransCanada’s chief executive officer, as he announced the sponsorship Monday. “We believe that through our support of this major event in the Yukon and by supporting excellence in Canadian youth, we are fostering national pride and Canadian unity.”

Headquartered in Calgary, TransCanada Corporation seeks to identify and forge meaningful partnerships with not-for-profit organizations in the many Canadian communities where TransCanada has facilities or offices. In 2004, TransCanada’s Community Investment program contributed more than $5 million to these communities. TransCanada’s network of approximately 41,000 kilometers (25,600 miles) of pipeline transports the majority of Western Canada’s natural gas production to the fastest growing markets in Canada and the United States. TransCanada owns, controls or is constructing more than 5,100 megawatts of power generation – enough to meet the electricity needs of about 5.1 million average households.

The Canada Winter Games will be held in Whitehorse, Yukon from February 24 to March 10, 2007. It is estimated that 3,500 athletes, coaches and officials will be participating in the Games, with over 4,500 volunteers supporting the 22 sporting events that will take place over the two-week period. These Games will be the first Canada Games ever to be held north of the 60th parallel and will mark the 40th anniversary of the Canada Games which were first held in 1967 and alternate every two years between summer and winter
