February 9, 2009 – On March 8, 2009 it will take place again – the only cross-country ski marathon in Turkey by Anatolian Marathon Association (AMA) will welcome skiers from all over the world at this unique event to enjoy skiing, breathtaking views of the mountains of Bolu province and Turkish hospitality. Skiers from Turkey, Estonia and many other countries will have a chance to ski on 42km, 20km and 10km ski trails. The guest of honor of this year’s event is Mrs. Kristiina Ojuland, First Vice-President of the Estonian Parliament and former Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs, who will attend the marathon in connection with her official visit to Turkey.

The first cross-country skiing marathon took place on March 16, 2008 when a handful of Estonian and Turkish cross-country ski enthusiasts, among them Mr. Märt Volmer, former Estonian Ambassador to Turkey and Mr. Jaanus Teppan, Head Coach of the Turkish National Cross Country Skiing Team. Organized with the support of many volunteers and sponsors the first cross-country skiing marathon in the history of Turkey, also welcomed Mr. Andrus Ansip, Estonian Prime Minister on the start line.

“Turkey is fairly unknown as a destination for cross-country skiers around the world. At the same time many foreign skiers coming to Turkey are surprised by the excellent snow conditions here. Turkey, which is mainly known for its beaches on the Mediterranean coast, will reveal herself from a totally different angle,” said Mr. Haldun Ãœlkenli, Chairman of the AMA.

The main supporters and sponsors of Anatolian Ski Marathon are Estonian Embassy in Turkey, Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey, Governorship of Bolu, Bolu Municipality and Anadolu Group.
