UNH Winter Carnival Day 2 – Dartmouth Dominates

release by the Jackson Ski Touring Foundation
January 31, 2009 (Jackson, NH) – Dartmouth dominated Day 2 of the U.N.H. Winter Carnival Nordic competition which took place in the bright sunshine on Saturday at Jackson XC. A total of more than 90 men and 75 women raced in this NCAA Division I event. Dartmouth took a first, second and third between the men’s and women’s events.

Winning her second race in some many days, the Big Green’s Rosie Brennan (Park City, UT) power skated the hilly 10km Wave course to lead her team. Coming in second in the women’s competition was the University of Vermont’s Caitlin Patterson (Anchorage, AK) and third was Freeport, Maine resident Lucy Garrec who skis for Colby College. The men’s race was won by Bates College’s Sylvan Ellefson (Vail, CO) who was followed closely by two Dartmouth men, Nils Koons (Sydney, Maine) and Ben True (North Yarmouth, Maine.)

The 10km course was comprised of two laps of a 5km trail that was recently homologated (internationally certified) by skiing’s international governing body, the FIS (Federation International de Ski). FIS homologation ensures that the race trail meets the highest standards for challenge while allowing room for faster skiers to overtake slower skiers. While renovating the trail for race purposes Jackson also incorporated many features that make the trail fun for recreational skiers and race spectators.

Race results and trail reports along with race photographs are posted at www.JacksonXC.org.
