USSA Partners With American Heart Association To Educate

provided by USSA

July 3, 2005 – The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association and the
American Heart Association’s Western States Affiliate are joining together
in the fight against heart disease and stroke, the two leading causes of
death in the United States.

USSA’s Director of Education Services David McCann noted the partnership
developed over various educational tools and practices that support AHAís
efforts as well as real-life examples of USSA’s success in these areas.
McCann recently traveled to Sacramento, Calif., to participate in
California AHAís annual Lobby Day at the state legislature. More than 140
AHA staff and volunteers met with the 80 assembly people and 40 senators
(and/or their staff) to present cases for the AHA legislation being
considered in California. Similar legislation is being advanced in Nevada
and Utah.

According to Molly Bowman-Styles, senior advocacy director for AHAís
Western States Affiliate representing California, Nevada and Utah, said the AHA is currently supporting three legislative bills being considered for adoption by the California legislature, including one requiring students to take physical education classes, fitness testing and better training for PE teachers. Another bill pushes for content standards for physical education and health education, including nutrition and physical activity. The third initiative includes a crackdown in tobacco sales to minors.

McCann explained that USSAís Coaches Education and Sports Science
departments believe that providing resources and training on topics such as
nutrition and exercise to students, teachers, parents and coaches will
produce athletes with a healthier lifestyle, who are fit and strong and
better prepared to deal with the pressures of training and competition. The
AHA believes the foundation and principles of USSAís programs will
translate nicely to curriculum for all students in the California, Nevada
and Utah school systems.

“The strong partnership between the American Heart Association and the U.S.
Ski and Snowboard Association reflects the shared values of our respective
organizations in the public policy arena,î said Bowman-Styles. ìWorking
collaboratively to empower children, of all ages, to take charge of their
health is an important endeavor that will protect future generations from
chronic diseases associated with obesity. Thanks to USSA’s commitment and
support, the goal of securing the passage of the American Heart
Association’s legislative priorities, promoting sound nutritional and
physical fitness policies in schools, is more promising than ever before.”

Bowman-Styles noted all three bills are advancing through the California
legislature and are expected to land on the Governor Schwarzenegger’s desk
by early Fall.
