May 10, 2008 – The Vancouver Sun published a story on the 50-year anniversary of a ski jumping competition held in Empire Stadium in Vancouver. In the pre-alpine skiing days, the sport was popular with spectators, and jumps were numerous all over the country. British Columbia had jump facilities on the North Shore Mountains, Princeton, Revelstoke, and Kimberly. This event unique, however. Organizers invited ski jumping superstars from all over the world, and constructed jumps using tubular steel. According to the Sun, the jump built for the tournament was the fourth-biggest in the world. The jump was 165 feet high and jumpers flew up to 150 feet. To read the full story, click here.
