March 12, 2015 (Lake Placid, NY) – Freshman Veronika Mayerhofer won the NCAA title in the women’s 5-km freestyle on the first day of the 2015 NCAA Championships are underway in Lake Placid, NY hosted by St Lawrence University. Sylvia Thorson Nordskar (Denver University) was second followed by New Mexico’s Emilie Cedervaern in third.
“What a day,” said Utah head Nordic coach Abi Holt. “Any race that adds another University of Utah skier to the list of Ute national champions is a good one, so I am pretty fired up right now! My only lament is that I wasn’t able to see the second half of Veronika’s race, because she really lit it up! I was giving splits around 2.5-km, and the splits indicated that Veronika was in a three-way tie for first place. For her to win that race by 13 seconds is really something.”
Dartmouth’s Patrick Caldwell topped the men’s field in their 10km FR race winning by 2.2s over Moritz Madlener (Denver) with Colorado’s Rune Malo Oedegaard in third another 12s behind.
