2019-2020 Ski at School Alta Gas Recipients

August 03, 2019 – Nordiq Canada is thrilled to present the 2020 Ski-at-School program Powered by AltaGas Grant Recipients! This is the fifth year of the AltaGas Ski-at-School grant, available to clubs and schools across Canada. Thank you for everyone’s growing interest from coast to coast!

In the final selection Nordiq Canada and AltaGas chose 6 applicants. Nordiq Canada is excited to announce the recipients of the 2019-20 AltaGas ski-at-School grant:

Foothills Nordic Ski Club, AB: With an established successful program, now in its 11th year running, Foothills Nordic was the first recipient of the first ever AltaGas grant, and are the leaders and trailblazers of the program. This year they plan to provide lessons at different schools in Calgary and teach skiing to 1000 students.

Ski de Fond Montréal, QC: Developing an outreach ski program for primary students. Adding winter programing that will offer district physical education teachers an activity to help integrate new immigrants to winter realities in Quebec.  Partnering with provincial student sport federation and ski division. This program has the potential to impact more than 1,000 students.

Takhini Elementary School, YK : This program will work to service indigenous children, marginalized youth and students from lower-income families. Takhini school has been involved in skiing through Recreation and Parks Association of the Yukon and Winter Active for Life. Primary students have been participating in the Subway Ski S’Cool at the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club. This grant will complete sets of equipment so both primary and intermediate students can participate.

École Marie-Anne Gabour / École Henri-Bergeon / École Varnnes, MB : Three neighbouring schools are teaming up to launch a Ski at School Program. The Varennes physical education teacher and their community liaison worker are looking to add to the physical activity programming they already offer to their school’s families and community. They would like to create a program that provides its community families the opportunity to borrow equipment in order to make x-country skiing more accessible.

Club de ski de fond Monteriski, QC: The program will create a mobile ski vehicle to go directly to schools. The mobile unit will be a way to provide interest to student and teachers and also facilitate in program organization and transportation for schools. This region is looking to be proactive in developing cross-country skiing and a mobile ski vehicle is a way to discover new members. Collaborating with Le Grand defi Pierre Lavoie.

Club de ski de Fond d’Evain, QC : There is a large demand for a ski at school programing but current minimal resources to support. This program will offer competent coaches to help stimulate students. The program shall also provide salaries to coaches and construct a complete athlete pathway to achieve a multifunctional club.
