September 29, 2018 – A debate over the ski-jumping events could derail Calgary’s bid for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games. While the IOC approved the staging of the ski jumping outside of Alberta there are calls to keep them in the province. In addition a debate over the costs involved amidst other political considerations are heatin things up. According to a Globe and Mail report City Councillor Joe Magliocca says handing over the Olympic ski jumping to B.C. would be “a slap in the face to the energy sector” referencing Alberta’s desire to build a pipeline to the West Coast and B.C.’s opposition to it. Meanwhile Calgary 2026 chief executive, Mary Moran, says renovating the ski jumps from the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary would be five-times higher than holding the events in Whistler – but not everyone agrees – read more here.
