January 05, 2019 (Val di Fiemme, Italy) – The USA’s Jessie Diggins finished 7th in the women’s 10k classic mass start as Norway’s Ingvild Flugstad Østberg proved to be in a league of her own leading the entire race for her third stage win. Russia’s Natalia Nepryaeva was second and her teammate Anastasia Sedova was third.
“I was really proud of how I raced today,” said Diggins. “My body just totally ran out of gas on me but I never gave up and never stopped pushing myself as hard as I could go. My skis were really competitive and I’m so proud of our team for working so hard. This far into the tour you never know how your body will react, but all you can do is race as hard as possible, and that’s my plan going into tomorrow.” Emily Nishikawa, the only remaining Canadian at the Tour de Ski, picked up five more spots in the overall standings following a 25th place finish. “I had a great start today and felt good for the first two laps, but I faded a bit in the second half of the race,” said Nishikawa who’s from Whitehorse. “Women’s racing always starts out really fast, so I was just trying to hang on in the pack and ski relaxed for as long as I could. It is a very challenging course here with a lot of big climbs, but I had amazing skis today which helped me get around the course.”
