Job Opportunity – Senior National Team Head Coach @ Biathlon Canada

April 18, 2019 – Biathlon Canada, the National Sport Organization for biathlon in Canada, is seeking a highly motivated individual to fill the position of Senior National Team Head Coach. The successful candidate will be expected to lead Biathlon Canada to long term success through the next two Olympic cycles.

Position Title: Senior National Team Head Coach
Reporting Structure: High Performance Director (HPD) [current: General Manager]
Scope: Full-time position based in Canmore, Alberta

Summary
Reporting to the HPD, the Senior National Team Head Coach (Head Coach) is responsible for leading the technical delivery and alignment of Senior National Team programs in order to achieve podium performances at Olympic Games and IBU World Championships and World Cups. The Head Coach will have the responsibility to plan, coordinate and monitor the training and competition of National Team athletes in line with Biathlon Canada’s collective goals.

Duties and Responsibilities
• Plan, coordinate and monitor the training, race preparation and competition of Senior National Team athletes in collaboration with the National Team Coach, Shooting Specialist.
• Create and monitor individualized training plans for all Senior National Team athletes.
• Collaborate closely with the Integrated Support Team (including sport science, sport medicine) to design, implement and monitor yearly training plans and competition plans for Senior National Team athletes.
• Collaborate thoroughly with the technical support team, including on ski selection, ski preparation and staff scheduling.
• Ensure long-term vision and periodization of training and racing to optimize athlete development and performance.
• Collaborate with Director, Long Term Athlete Development to ensure alignment of Senior National Team and feeder high performance programs through common strategies in the daily training environment and identify and implement systematic links between plans.
• Foster core team values and excellence behaviours.
• Plan and lead training camps and international and domestic competition tours.
• Identify key initiatives and strategies to maximize sustainable performance of Canadian athletes at the international level.

• Provide reports and program evaluation for the Senior Nation Team and other National Team program activities to ensure program development and facilitate goal attainment.
• Collaborate with high performance team members to establish annual performance benchmarks for athletes and programs.
• Participate in team and athlete selection discussions as a consultant of the High Performance Working Group (HPWG).

Requirements
• University degree is sport sciences or related field or equivalent.
• Coaching education/certification that aligns with the requirements of the position.
• Proven ability to inspire and mentor coaches and athletes within the national high performance network and to deliver and integrate the key components of a high performance program.
• Proven success leading teams of athletes, coaches and support staff at major international competitions.
• Strong understanding of high performance sport and the Canadian sport system.
• Leadership skills to develop and contribute to the development of a high performance team and to build strong relationships and credibility with athletes, coaches and support staff.
• Strong decision-making and conflict resolution abilities.
• Thorough understanding of the scientific basis of training and peaking for performance with a demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge.
• Thorough understanding of high level ski technique with a demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge.
• Proficient in English required and in French an asset.
• Valid Canadian Driver’s license or the ability to attain one.
• Possession and Acquisition License for firearms or the ability to attain one.
• Background Check (Criminal Record check etc.).
• A high level of data analysis skills with the ability to collect and analyze large quantities of performance and sport related data.
• Flexibility to adjust work schedule to the changing demands of the program, particularly during the competitive season.

• Strong organizational skills and demonstrated capacity to develop and implement practical strategies, plans, and solutions to identified issues and problems.

• Ability to work efficiently within a national team environment that is integrated and seamless.
• The ability to create an inclusive and safe sport environment for all athletes, coaches, and practitioners in line with the True Sport Principles.
• Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office.

Working Conditions
• Required to work evenings and weekends
• Required to work outdoors, including on snow
• Required to travel extensively both domestically and internationally
